Writing again…

I really used to enjoy writing, but for me it is a muscle that hasn’t been used in a long time. Certainly not regularly since college. I used to believe that hidden within every language there was a perfect combination of words to settle any argument, persuade any skeptic, unravel any bias. I fortunately or unfortunately am no longer quite that naive. I have come to understand all too well that human beings are not rational creatures.

Perhaps it was partially this realization, and the resulting frustration that led me to step away from writing for humans and instead choose to write instructions for the most rational and logical of creatures - computers. Programming for me has scratched the same itch. Whether or not you consider computer programming a creative endeavor, I have found tremendous joy in making pixels do something on a page, in solving problems, in thinking through the process of design and automation.

And yet here I am again, feeling hollow and frustrated. Computers do not need persuasion, computers do not need inspiration. Computers will execute whatever compiles with utter indifference. There is an undeniable convenience in that, but in a way I can’t help but feel that in some small way this style of thinking has atrophied the very thing that makes me most human. Afterall, it is the nuance, imperfection and irrationality that gives the human experience all of its color.

And thus the boomerang. I’m choosing to make a habit of writing for people again. “People” in this case is generous. I don’t really expect anyone else to read this stuff. It will likely be incomplete and unpolished most of the time. I will start by writing for myself with the intention of getting thoughts on paper and the goal of forming a good habit. I will write about no particular topic, but rather about whatever I find interesting or inspiring. I will avoid topics that make me angry and write from the heart about anything that makes me feel alive and “human”.
